On 19 February 2016, the European Commission's Rapid Alert System for non-food products (RAPEX) issued a consumer warning against the Chinese brand "KENYI TOYS - GAZELO toys" for plastic toy cars. The country notified in this case is Latvia. The notified product was a colourful plastic toy car, which was packaged and sold in a cardboard box. The product has a barcode of 5907773931980 and is classified in the OECD Portal Category as 86000000 (toys).
The above toy vehicle poses a choking hazard to children. The small parts of the toy are easily detached and can be placed in the mouth of younger children, which can lead to choking. The product does not meet the requirements of the EU Toy Safety Directive and the relevant European Standard en71-1.
China is a major manufacturer of small crafts and, naturally, toys, and the size and influence of Chinese toys in the US market is evident from the fact that the only overseas office of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is located in Beijing. Half of all products regulated by the CPSC come from China," says Jake Miller, head of the office. Nearly 90 per cent of toys [sold in the US] now come from China."
At toy shows in recent years, most buyers have demanded safety guarantees from manufacturers, and seminars around toy safety standards are always packed. This shows that plastic toy manufacturers should still make the safety of their products the primary criterion for production.
